Just a note to those getting started- Don't think anything of the bright orangy colored rust you see on items throughout this video, it will be your constant companion if you have an outdoor shop. You can take a wire brush and clean a chisel, for example, so it is shiny and clean, bare metal and overnight it will have this "flashrust" appear on it. No problem, it is nothing and for the most part you can wipe it off with your hand.

@ ... By: patrinrom. on 21 May 10, 12:13:27 @ThePhantomBlacksmith i mostly use em for plate and large odd items yes they do leave marks. this video was intended for the starting blacksmith with no skills or acess to good tools to get by with also i filed down the teeth on mine to cut down on the marks.
@ ... By: aobbuddy. on 14 Apr 10, 20:32:51 @ThePhantomBlacksmith ...hi, im a blacksmith in ireland, no disrespect meant, but vicegrips are not good, cause too many marks on your work and grip un-efficiently. tings can be made to hold all sections, the most basic tongs being, square hollow bit, wolf jaw and flat bit. you can hold all stock with variations of these tongs in size and shape. i know many blacksmiths personally around 80, none use vice grips for a good reason. anyways, sorry for sounding rude, but just thought id say :-)
tongs are fun. I ... By: ThePhantomBlacksmith. on 23 Mar 10, 21:23:17 tongs are fun. I enjoy making them. But truth be told, vice grips have replaced 90% of them and do a better job. (unless you have to reach way back in the fire)
Other blacksmiths get indignant and scowl at me when I say this...lol

heyyou, first, ... By: kalevraa. on 30 Sep 09, 23:28:34 heyyou, first, blacksmithing is very much NOT a dying art; there are 4000 members in the national organization alone. second, you are welcome to your purist views, but water-operated power hammers have been around for hundreds of years. third, every blacksmith who wants to make a living needs a power hammer. try forging a 100-foot railing by hand. fourth, your definition of blacksmithing as solely hand-work is random nonsense, historically and factually. fifth, i love to hand-forge.

Smithing is a ... By: dblacksmithr. on 02 Jul 09, 10:47:01 Smithing is a repetitive impact strain on the muscles and joints of the arm. A few years ago I was chopping wood and came down full force with my elbow and hit a pile of wood behind me. I tore some tendons in my elbow. The arm brace helps prevent the vibration from the hammering from inflaming the joint. It is not 100% but helps alot. That combined with a loose hammer grip allows me to continue working. If you buy one of these get one with a gel capsule and place it on the lower tendon.
