We normally allow ... By: forgemaster01. on 15 Sep 09, 12:15:31 We normally allow between 3 to 5% heat wastage on stock to be forged. The allowance is decided upon regarding the amount of heats required and the complexity of the forging. Heat wastage does reduce stock as it is steel lost by oxidisation. Thats why we make allowance for it. Scale is not the same as slag. slag contains impurities fluxes etc, scale is almost pure iron. Pigs can fly you must be really old, forgers have been working with presses and manipulators since the 1800s.

Smithing is a ... By: dblacksmithr. on 02 Jul 09, 10:47:01 Smithing is a repetitive impact strain on the muscles and joints of the arm. A few years ago I was chopping wood and came down full force with my elbow and hit a pile of wood behind me. I tore some tendons in my elbow. The arm brace helps prevent the vibration from the hammering from inflaming the joint. It is not 100% but helps alot. That combined with a loose hammer grip allows me to continue working. If you buy one of these get one with a gel capsule and place it on the lower tendon.

Furthermore, The ... By: deadmanog123. on 28 Jul 10, 19:37:21 Furthermore, The longer the steel is at welding temp, the more carbon is burned out, thats the sparks you see flying off when the hammer hits. Carbon is what made steel harden when it is heat treated. The hammer allows the smith to refine and shape the steel faster thereby reducing the amount of carbon lost. So... cleaner steel+better welds+higher carbon content= better sword, at least metalurgically speaking. BTW I have been making Katana for 15 years here in the good old U.S.A.
So let me help out ... By: deadmanog123. on 28 Jul 10, 19:23:05 So let me help out withe the term "Machine Made" that machine he is useing is a trip hammer. It does the exact same thing that three helpers with sledge hammers did for the traditional smith. Fact is that a trip hammer hits with ten time the amount of force than that of a human with a hammer. The benefit is that with the trip hammer, the air pockets in the billet are forced out more and the welds are stronger and crack free throughout the hundreds of layers in a good sword.

Oh by the way, for ... By: ArchWinds. on 26 Jun 10, 20:46:00 Oh by the way, for those who think nihonto can bend pretty far and return to their original shape, a nihonto can bend and not return to its original shape, since the hamon makes the edge harder than the spine(I don't feel like using the Japanese sword terms, like mune, since not all people know then. The mune is the spine btw). Beecause the edge is hard, they sword can only bend to a certain point and return to its original shape, which isn't too far.
Any sword has ... By: ArchWinds. on 26 Jun 10, 20:37:01 Any sword has danger risks we have to take. One of the risks is the risk of the sword breaking, which can happen even to nihonto. Just cuz a sword is made in a certain place, doesn't mean its invincible or perfect. I know there are a bunch of bad swords made in China, sold as fake antiques(not fake swords!) and such, but that doesn't make all Chinese sword makers bad! Now I'm not playing favorites, I'm just angry that people make stupid assumptions about swords and their makers.
A typical person ... By: ArchWinds. on 26 Jun 10, 20:25:17 A typical person who has little research or info would immediately think that all Chinese made swords are trash. Even more, people who think that machine made swords aren't swords and are rubbish are idiots, since a SWORD IS A SWORD regardless of how it's made. A sword can't not be a sword since that makes no sense. A sword can, however, be a badly made sword and be called rubbish, but it's still a sword like it or not, it's just a sword you don't want to use because of higher danger risks.
The Chinese katana ... By: ArchWinds. on 26 Jun 10, 20:10:43 The Chinese katana may not be nihonto, but there are some really good Chinese forges. The swords that the good forges make are actually really good and reliable. Besides, MOST PEOPLE WHO BUY NIHONTO DON'T EVEN USE THEM BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO RUIN ITS BEAUTY or BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO RISK DAMAGING SOMETHING VERY EXPENSIVE. With Chinese forges, people are more okay with using the swords and risk damaging them because they aren't as expensive, swords are made for that reason, CUTTING.

The only way to ... By: Excomunicater. on 14 Jul 09, 20:33:23 The only way to significantly weaken the steel by overheating it is if you get the steel past melting temperature. The metal will spark and become deformed and pitted if this happens. The metal is supposed to be right below or just about at melting temperature so that the steel can bond properly. This will weaken the steel slightly which is why getting the metal welded in as little heats as possible is favorable. Also another way that the steel will weaken is if it is re-heated too many times.
It will take more ... By: JesusBladesmith. on 16 Jun 09, 23:28:59 It will take more words that I can type in here to properly answer your question. Let me say first, that the camera that I used doesn't read infrared exposure very well and will create an image that looks brighter than it is. Secondly, when forge-welding the color of the steel will be orange-white (over 2200 degrees F) but when you forge the temperature range will go down (1600-1800 or more) depending on the type of steel. The grain can always be refined later with proper heat treating.
From what I`ve seen ... By: arhvash. on 16 Jun 09, 03:17:43 From what I`ve seen in other blade forging videos the blacksmiths are always aware of not overheating the steel, cause it will weaken the future blade.
While in this video the steel you were using was so hot that it looked like a piece of clay(overheated?).
So what I want to ask is, how "soft" can you make steel by heating it without weaken it?

By: azreal289. on 14 May 10, 20:12:47 @MarkAspery im a noob trying to practice welding, i took a quarter inch thick rectangular bar and beat it as flat as I could, I made a fold and i am now trying to make that fold weld to the body of the piece, it seems that nothing i do makes it change, i reheated it to the same color i see at 0:19 and struck the fold repeatedly to no avail, any tips?

The flux that I use ... By: MarkAspery. on 03 Feb 10, 02:04:56 The flux that I use does two things:
1.) It forms a glass around the metal - protecting it from oxidization
2.) Being slightly basic (alkaline) it dissolves any oxidization (scale) that has already formed
Both of these properties help keep the weld area clean.
Cheers, Mark

A friend of mine makes knives but every here and there he gets a client that wants a Katana-sword and that is some good pay. Hunters also want him to make good hunting knives for him and he also sharpens knives for restaurants. But machine metal workers are killing off most of the traditional blacksmiths because they are cheaper, work more precise due to the machines and get things done faster. I blacksmith as a hobby and LOVE making knives

By: 1metalnation. on 14 Nov 09, 05:06:10 ah i get it now, ur reffering to my comment about using a rivet, that was directed to a blacksmith who wanted to forge a small metal rose, its obvious that the steel isnt to thin to forge weld, so first dont question someone unless u know precisely what he is talking about, second, I made the comment about the flux because is makes a cleaner stronger weld, I do listen, I do learn, thats why i can make informed comments, instead of bitch at someone for a comment that wasnt even directed a him

To me it sounds like you know very little about the art and have very little respect for those who have spent their lives learning and giving back to the craft.
You'll learn a lot more by listening instead of waiting for your turn to talk.

The cost of a forging die depends on the size, the accuracy needed and how long the tool will be used, and it is common to need 3-4 dies for final shaping of the product. A forging mill can easily cost a few million dollars. If you are good with chemistry and math you should look into a career as a metallurgist.

Ummm......No. This is the art of metallurgy. This is heating metal almost to the melting point so it gets soft and pliable, and loses magnetism. Once the metal gets soft, you can manipulate it mainly with a hammer or a press. Hope this helps.

We normally allow between 3 to 5% heat wastage on stock to be forged.
