With todays balls and clubs Tiger hits a 7 or 8 which makes the course play MUCH easier. If you want to see the difference, go play your local course from the white tees and then play 18 more from the back tees. It will add AT LEAST 5 strokes or more to your score.

In fact, Ballesteros eagled 13, as well. to wind up shooting 70 with two eagles, i'd call 'coming back to the field'. Likewise Greg Norman and his 70. But, bottom line is, Nicklaus whipped all their asses that day.

Intangibles that Jack has over Tiger IMO are swing tempo & distance control. The latter as a result of the former. When comparisons are made between Jack & Tiger, this rarely seems to come up. Hogan & Jones (obviously Snead) had super tempo as well, but Jack had more overall power.
When asked what Jack's greatest strength was, Tom Watson immediately said swing tempo.

FWIW, the big move to the outside of the left foot was more of a mid-career thing; if you look at photos from his late teens and early 20s, he was much firmer in the left leg at impact, and later in his career he came to believe that was a better way to do it--that you could still release from the ground up with a strong move without sagging or bowing the left side so much. Grout never liked that move anyway--tried to get Jack to swing "from the insides of the feet."

The ball ... By: charlton3695. on 17 Jun 10, 19:27:48 Jack,
The ball should be in the center of every stance if the body is set up properly at the correct angles. One can modify the ball position forward or back to get different flight patterns. Arnold Palmer told me that I knew more about the golf swing than anyone he had ever talked to. It is because eccentric contractions of the major muscles in the legs and back will biomechanically set you up to hit properly. I can teach you just like I did "The King" if you are game.

He was under contract to MacGregor which made, according to Nicklaus, an absolutely terrible ball. Inconsistent from one sleeve to the next. Just a real dog compared to the Titleist and Slazengers of the day. I'd love to see Jack in his prime with today's equipment and golf balls. of course, his swing would be different, too, but just as dynamic. nobody in the history of the game loads the shaft like jack.

I was always more accurate with my driver (played off left heel) than irons which made no sense. But it was because I played my irons too far back in the stance so the club face didn't have time to square up. I always had to manipulate the club to get it square. This short video has helped me greatly.

By: justjames1111. on 15 Nov 09, 00:18:37 Jack Nicklaus is not the only one who promotes a one ball position, Ben Hogan said similar, and teaching methods seem to go in fashion cycles, but for the modern game Butch Harmon and David Leadbetter also maintain a single ball position not only gives you less to think about but gives consistency. He mentions two ... By: bus114. on 01 May 10, 16:38:07 He mentions two factors explaining why Woods hit 5 iron to Nicklaus' 1 iron: Different golf balls, different clubs. He leaves out two other factors: Today's 5 iron has the loft of a 1972 4-iron; but even more important is this: IT'S PEBBLE BEACH! THE WIND IS WILDLY DIFFERENT EVERY DAY! Nicklaus needed a 1 iron that day; Woods needed 5 iron a different day. Same clubs, same ball, same wind, Nicklaus was probably longer.
absolutely, right. ... By: earthshine2k. on 12 Apr 10, 02:08:56 absolutely, right. Nicklaus said he had incredible 'timing' that week and, indeed, felt himself 'shut' at the top and he made the adjustment in the downswing. If you look at that shot, he hit a 'slinging' hook in there that short hopped the flag stick. I think Nicklaus' upright action facilitated his downswing adjustments in that he was able to keep his path moving along the target line while he made those minute adjustments to the face angle through impact. Pure genius of the Golden Bear.

Jack proved to everyone in his 40s, he's still the best of all time, Nicklaus played with a tougher field than Woods ever did. Jack in his prime would beat Tiger, in any tournament. By: bryanhfs. on 04 May 10, 19:05:00
Jack Nicklaus had a MUCH better golf swing and mechanics than Tiger. On this video they say he is hitting a 5 iron from about 175ish. With todays balls and clubs Tiger hits a 7 or 8 which makes the course play MUCH easier. If you want to see the difference, go play your local course from the white tees and then play 18 more from the back tees. It will add AT LEAST 5 strokes or more to your score.

@cnocher02 You bet, Nicklaus is the best of all time!
By: GeorgiaDawgs804. on 20 Apr 10, 03:42:04
@draber12 Jack head to head with Tiger in his prime would kill him.
By: GeorgiaDawgs804. on 20 Apr 10, 03:40:53
"The Golden Bear" The greatest golfer who has ever lived. Tiger will "never" match his major championships.

In the "good ole days" of Jack, Tiger would be fighting to carry Jack's clubs !! His 6 Green jackets will rule for another generation.

@flux77xulf Yeah - he "destroyed" Nicklaus' 32-year old record by a whole one shot. Better course conditions, equipment, etc. Quite an achievement. 12 shots over Tom Kite vs. nine shots over Palmer & Player. Yes...destroyed.

@flux77xulf Grandpa? I'm 18, pal. TIger is the best for the past decade, but Jack is still the best to ever play the game.
By: flux77xulf. on 15 Apr 10, 06:43:37
@cnocher02 heh. Good one, grandpa. Any modern golfer, stronger, better training, and far better equipment win 80% of tournaments in the 70s or 80s. And Tiger is clearly the best golfer in the world the past decade. He won the 97 Masters by 12 strokes and set a course record, destroying anything Nickalaus ever did.
By: sretsam68. on 14 Apr 10, 19:58:18
@draber12 He should. Nicklaus is 70 with a false hip.
By: draber12. on 13 Apr 10, 21:12:00
Tiger on his worst day could destroy this old curmudgeon

Jack is GOD.

@BCKLW don't think so - HGH is naturally occurring in the body so he will get away with it.

@indkeith he won't win 5 more, or you don't want him to win 5 more? it's not like he lost a limb or something. Please enlighten me as to who will prevent him from eclipsing Nicklaus.

Back then, all the par 5's were reachable in two with the exception of #8 which was accessible if not 'reachable'. Kite and Ballesteros each chipped in for eagle at 8 in the final round. Shooting 70 or higher that day was tantamount to shooting an over par round of golf. In fact, Ballesteros eagled 13, as well. to wind up shooting 70 with two eagles, i'd call 'coming back to the field'. Likewise Greg Norman and his 70. But, bottom line is, Nicklaus whipped all their asses that day.
